    Whether in print or online, technical writing and training successfully means thorough understanding of the subject. One must be a quick study with new systems. Mary-Margaret is able to enable student comprehension by combining learning with clear visual communications.



    Southern California Edison: Train the Trainer Methodology
    SCE required a highly experiential "train the trainer" workshop to encourage in-house trainers to develop more creative and dynamic training materials and to teach them project management principles and standardized methodology along the way.

    In order to keep the trainers interest piqued, Mary-Margaret based the entire course on a metaphorical "game show university" theme. Interactive learning games included: "What-s My Line" (performing analysis), "Wheel of Misfortune" (handling changes in the production cycle) and the "Game of Life" (managing projects). The third day was dedicated solely to improving Project Management skills.

    An overall flow chart shows the complete methodology process. And detailed views of different phases of the process were also created. Mary-Margaret was the principle designer, illustrator, creative consultant, wrote the final course materials and co-facilitated several test training sessions.







    TheZenith / CalFarm (Performance Learning Partners)
    Information Services required access to a database of available learning resources. The 'ISD Technical Learning Program,' an interactive online application with highly intricate (updateable) hyperlinks, was produced from this database. The sales training and distance learning program included training modules and process checks. Mary-Margaret designed and programmed final application and documentation.











    Ricoh Electronics
    Ricoh wished to translate their three day sales training classroom course into a distance learning course. The object of the course was to give sales people a solid understanding of how computers worked so that they could sell peripheral systems more effectively. Only skeletal materials existed, so most of the course was re-written. The course was technology intensive and required Mary-Margaret to learn about computers from binary code to networks and then translate that knowledge to interactive web-based training.

    Mary-Margaret also produced the front end user experience interface design before handing the course off to the production and delivery team.









     
    DreamWorks Documentation Department
    Mary-Margaret wrote the Documentation Plan for Animo, the principle software used by the studio. She developed a survey with existing users to ascertain priorities, assessed the results and co-wrote a 2-5 year plan. As a result, she delivered technical documentation including introductions to custom plug-in software modules and produced a well-received Animo keyboard shortcut card. She also produced a comprehensive guide to Digital Composting.

    At a technology open house Mary-Margaret demonstrated to executives the importance of techincal documentation by challenging them to make an origami tshirt from a piece of paper. After failed attempts, they were given detailed illustrated instructions and succeeded the task.

    In addition to technical writing, Mary-Margaret also worked towards improving organizational management with a series of executive level proposals on knowledge management for the company outlining requirements, proposed reporting structures and relationships and annual operating budget.







     
     



    Vital Learning: First Data
    First Data is a third-party credit processing company that required a three day intensive workshop to be developed to educate about, promote and market company services and products internally.

    The Executive Summary explains how difficult concepts were compressed into easily understandable metaphorical learning tools and entertaining pictorial graphics. In order to make the often "dry" information more a appealing - a wild west metaphorical theme was chosen.

    Working with a project manager and fellow instructional designer, Mary-Margaret attended JAD sessions, co-wrote out the design parameters, contributed concepts for the executive summary, and then designed and did layout for the final Facilitator and Participant manuals and Art Directed colorful course materials.

    "Facilitator" and "Participant" manuals are a special breed of page layout. Students require easy-to-scan outlines with plenty of space for notes. Teachers require clear directions that are easy to read when standing in front of a class of students. Iconography often figures prominently to help identify pauses, key points or activities.








    Valley Tour
    Mary-Margaret took a year sabbatical to fulfill her dream to expose the architectural gems of the San Fernando Valley, CA. Mary-Margaret conceived the tour as a fundraiser for the Modern Committee. She developed the project plan, budget and was responsible for volunteer solicitation and management, researching, writing and final layout and production of the 80 page tour booklet, and marketing and press releases. She managed a team of over 80 volunteers with direct contact through 12 site captains.

    This educational self-driving tour generated tremendous exposure for the Los Angeles Conservancy and was attended by over 700 people. It also received the best press a Conservancy event has ever garnered, including L.A. Times Magazine cover feature story, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. The tour was also featured as a field session for the prestigious National Trust Conference in Los Angeles. The National Trust tour received the highest feedback seen for any session.












    Canon Bubble Jet Printers Presentations
    Jetu produced numerous marketing presentations for new computer and printer products. These were used at conventions and in store displays. In addition to art directing and storyboarding these shows, Mary-Margaret oversaw the production of a master presentation display.








    SupraSite
    Mary-Margaret began writing the “Electronic Graphic Dictionary” handbook while preparing to teach a desktop publishing class at The Learning Tree University. The project quickly mushroomed into a dictionary of definitions for over 1000 computer graphic and computer terms. She lent this resource and other learning tools on graphic and web design to Suprasite, which was designed as a marketing tool to gain links and search engine visibility for a web hosting company.

    Xpedior Creative Team Management
    As the Senior Creative Consultant in the Los Angeles Xpedior office, Mary-Margaret was responsible for helping to guide and improve the recruitment and development of the local creative team. She identified options available for building the creative practice and analyzed the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) of each choice. Her work was shared with other offices across the country.

    She was also part of the team responsible for helping to improve the processes and methodology for producing creative deliverables, including describing the steps in building a website from start to finish.









     


    IBM Interactive Sale Training Videodisc and CBT
    One of Mary-Margaret’s first large professional assignments was working as an Art Director was for a 10 hour interactive sales training videodisk. It was revolutionary for the year 1988 and won several awards. The course was designed to teach IBM sales personnel the principles of high-end computers and scientific computing These various usages were described and pictured through drawings and simple animations.

    The project was an early example of Information Architect work before the job title had even been invented: production monitoring, graphical user interface prototypes, art lists, site maps and navigational scheme.

    The first two images seen here are scans of slides shot off of a CRT.

    Also shown are samples from a different computer based sales training project. Here, IBM asked for a metaphorical navigation paradigm that would encourage non-linear exploration of the course content. They settled on a more abstract design.
